Advertising Standards Council bans health claims by CBD webshop

The Advertising Standards Council has ruled that a CBD webshop made misleading health claims. According to the council, a seller may not suggest a medical effect without solid evidence.

What the council decided

The webshop claimed that the oil reduces inflammation and anxiety. For such concrete claims, strong substantiation is required, and this was lacking. The seller must adjust the relevant texts.

The ruling fits into a series of warnings to the sector. For food supplements, strict European regulations apply: health claims must be pre-approved. Moreover, the status of CBD as a food is controversial.

For consumers, the lesson is sober: beautiful promises on packaging are not proof. Anyone considering a remedy for medical reasons should best discuss it with a doctor or pharmacist.
